Nothing boosts team pride like winning an award. We win a lot of awards in advertising, in fact, this week is the biggest show on earth, the Cannes Festival of Creativity.

But rarely do media agencies win awards for recruiting. So this was a lot.

The GroupM Talent Acquisition team presented our two entries for the 2019 Talent Acquisition Innovation Awards at the Strategic Talent Acquisition Conference in Denver.

Our entry on behalf of Mindshare, “Elevate Your Career” – won the day, beating out the likes of General Assembly and Main Event, and we walked away with a (physically impressive) $5,000 check which went to charity – specifically the United Fund of Peurto Rico.

Thanks to Randstad Sourceright for their generous sponsorship.

Our GroupM entry, “Picture Yourself Working Here”, an extension of our Google Hack that Michael Wright wrote about in an earlier post - was a runner up in the enterprise category, narrowly missing out to Cisco. Honestly, we were honored just to have been shortlisted.

So how did we do it?

Of course these things take a village. Perhaps the best part of the experience was collaborating with multiple internal partners and sponsors across our organization to bring the idea to life. They included the Mindshare CEO & CFO, The GroupM Marketing Team, The Mindshare Marketing Team, our external vendor, Melody at Yooteki, the Team at Captivate, The Mindshare Insights Team, and of course June Appell in my Team who came up with the original thought.

This is big stuff. From our research, it’s the first time a media agency in the US has won an award for recruiting. Clients and prospects are more interested than ever in how we are going to staff up a team to service their business, so innovation in the area of recruiting is table stakes.

Holding companies and Media & Advertising agencies seem to be trying to figure out how to simplify their structures and work better together. What better evidence do you need of amazing group-wide collaboration than a win like this!?

So having won the award, here's a bunch of what we learned top tips so you can do the same.

Be in the game. Set up Google alerts so you can keep track of future events and awards to enter.Be prepared to collaborate cross-functionally! Often there's a push-pull between HR, Marketing, and Talent Acquisition as to who owns talent branding or recruitment marketing efforts. Stop fighting for territory and focus on working together for a team win.Plan to win. Set aside time to build the script, story, deck, well in advance of the deadline.Focus on one big idea, executed brilliantly and built upon human insights, not some box-ticking "these are all the things we did" transformation.

Further Mentions:

"Picture Yourself Working Here" entry may not have won the award but the story is definitely worth hearing. The conference center was abuzz after our pitch and many attendees told us how much they loved our idea.

It was innovative, original, and anybody could do it for free...but they didn't. We may not have brought home the trophy but we are recruiting pioneers and should be proud of ourselves.
